In May of 2009 Azusa Pacific University funded a multi-discipline project to generate new creative works on the subject of The Lord’s Prayer. The project resulted in new commissioned compositions, new works of visual arts, and a series of scholarly lectures.
As part of that project, I was commissioned to write a new choral work, to be premiered by the Azusa Pacific University Men’s Chorale. The resulting piece, “Our Father, Vindicate”, seeks to capture some of the fervor and revolutionary zeal that would have confronted the original hearers of the prayer, as recorded in Matthew 6:9-13. It was premiered by the APU Men’s Chorus at the American Choral Director’s Association in March of 2010.
